Shanghai Food at Maxwell Market
If you love Shanghainese fried dumplings (锅贴), Shanghai rice cakes, or hot and sour soup (酸辣汤), tucked away in the busy Maxwell Market is Tongxinju (同心居), a stall that specializes in Shanghai dim sum.
Tongxinju used to be at the old Margaret Drive food centre (since 1972) before its current address at Maxwell Market. According to their website, all the dumplings are made fresh by hand daily!
What we tried
- Fried Dumplings (锅贴)
A plate of 8 fried dumplings cost $5.20, and comes with a ginger vinegar dipping sauce and a plate of chilli. We love the crispiness of the dumplings, and they are not overtly oily. The pork filling is well seasoned and when the dumpling is paired with the vinegar dip, it is a match made in heaven.
2. Hot and sour soup
If you love thick, starchy soup with a tinge of sourness, you are going to love this soup! With a chockful of ingredients like prawns, pork, egg drop, and fish cake, every mouthful is delightful. Be sure to finish the soup while it’s hot, as it turns more starchy when it loses the heat.
