Qing Nian Chun (青年春) Tea at Jurong Point
I love Chinese tea, and upon knowing a new tea shop with seating capacity has popped up at Jurong Point, I eagerly went to try what Qing Nian Chun has to offer. This is their first outlet in Singapore.
Their Teas
According to their signboard and menu, their teas hails from Suzhou, and their signature series is made from Biluochun (碧螺春). Biluochun is a green tea grown in Suzhuo, and it has a strong aroma and a delicate floral taste.
Their Drinks Menu
Their price of their teas ranges from $4.50 to $7.00. Currently, they have 18 types of drinks available in 5 categories, namely Biluochun, Hengxian Jasmine (Hengxian is the old name of Heng County, and is famous for its jasmine tea), Orchid Oolong, Pure Tea and Da Hong Pao.
Fun fact – Da Hong Pao is also a type of oolong tea.
Their Food Options
It’s not on the main signboard, but they do offer muah chee (mochi with peanut toppings) in two variations, mochi balls with yam filling topped with grounded peanut powder, and cut mochi mixed with peanut powder, served with brown sugar syrup.
We bought the latter at $4.50. The texture of the muah chee is a bit stiff for my liking. It feels like it has been left standing for a while. The best type of muah chee, in my humble opinion, should be warm, soft and chewy, Unfortunately this muah chee hit none of these spots.
The Drinks
What we ordered
We ordered the Signature Orchid Biluochun Tea (without milk) at $4.50, and the Orchid Oolong Pure Tea at $4.50, both at 50% sugar. At that point, it just dawned on me that there was no options for pearls or toppings. Our drinks were served in strong plastic cups in a very oriental design. I feel bad for throwing these sturdy cups after a single use.
The taste
The Biluochun and Oolong tasted very similar to us! I was expecting the oolong tea to have some roasted notes. At 50% sugar without milk, both drinks have an astringent aftertaste, which is called ‘siap 涩’ in hokkien. Sometimes, astringency can be covered up with milk, thus for our drinks, the absence of milk accentuates this.
The Decor
The shop is nicely decorated with oriental accents. There are about 5 to 6 wooden tables that can seat 2 to 4 people each.
Will I buy another drink from here again?
I will probably try the signature Orchid tea with milk next time, to give it another chance. Will I buy the muah chee again? Probably not. I think I can get a better muah chee at any pasar malam stalls at $3.
You can find Qing Nian Chun at Jurong Point #02-22A/K7/K8.
